Odessa-X’s debut E.P. is a distinct post-IDM sound-mash that bears the DNA of the last 40 years of electronica's evolution while also showcasing the deft touch of an accomplished drummer. It's a heady post-postmodern elixir where the non-linear and complex beats of an Aphex Twin / Autechre style workout intermingle with a haunting sense of melody reminiscent of 4AD’s seminal Cocteau Twins.
Francesco Belviso's broad musical alchemy is a product - in equal parts - of influential years in the Perth underground scene, a stint in a London-based Techno and Electronica collective, as well as a long-running study of the art of great drummers from every genre of music imaginable. Somewhere in his travels a fascination with all things Eastern Europe has also made its mark; a resonance connecting back to initial industrial and cinematic leanings.
The Manifestations E.P. bears witness to these influences, rooted in complex beat shapes and exciting time-signature shenanigans. At the same time, Odessa-X is forever concocting mini cinematic soundtracks rich in emotive melodies and cut-up textures. It's hard to tell if those melodic trails are created by analogue synths or treated guitar, and that's part of the Odessa-X appeal.
These six songs represent a point between the past and the future sound of the artist; the follow-up EP scheduled for early 2021 - 'Manifestations' - represents the stirrings of a new futurism.
